WORK FOR THE "YES" 

There was an entrepreneur interviewed by Steve on CBC Information Morning today.  He's in a completely revolutionary concept of washing cars with only one litre of water.  As with all new stuff on the market, there are early adopters and tens of others who are skeptical who would need a tremendous amount of time and energy to be convinced and still, maybe would not detract from their original opinion.

His point is to work closely with early adopters.  Work for the "YES".  They are the ones who will carry the message to their friends and neighbours efficiently and at the least cost.  Working with positive people is engaging and energizing, it leads to creativity, passionateness, inventiveness, good humour and positive stress that strengthen the immune system and even improve health.  

Isn't that working for and with the "YES" creates a more pleasant environment? 

 

Personally, I find working for the "YES" kind of addictive.  So many good results and feedback.

 

RIDES CAPTAIN CORNER

Today marks the last day of summer.  Days are getting shorter and there's not as much light at the end of the day for us to be highly visible on the road.  

Visibility has two requirements:

1.  Ride in such a way as to be visible to other traffic..

2.  Dress for visibility.  During the day dressing in bold colours makes you more visible.  At dusk and night, proper lighting is your best visibility aid, but clothing colour is a definite aid.  (Excerpt from the book Taking the Road by Denys Beames, CAN-BIKE National Examiner.)

For everyone’s safety, both motorists and cyclists need to be respectful and responsible road users as they share the road. Obey all traffic laws, be courteous towards each other, and everyone will be safer on the roads.

Views from a "Tuesday Morning Relaxed Rider" - by Heather Gillis.

It was one of those sunny slightly crisp pre-fall days as I cycled up to Membertou to meet the Velo group, for the Tuesday relaxed ride.  These ideal conditions energized me with anticipation for the day ahead.  When I arrived at Tim Hortons I was greeted by Micheline, who introduced me to everyone.  We all had a brief chat and decided that those of us who wanted to go at a slower ‘smell the roses’ kind of pace would form a second group.  Micheline, Valerie, and I spent part of the morning meandering along the quiet streets of Sydney’s south end towards our goal of the Sydney Harbourside Park (site of the former Steel Plant). The flat newly paved surface of the roads provided a smooth and a somewhat effortless ride.   We then exited the park via a short tunnel, site of a former steel plant gate, now forming the entrance to the Whitney Pier Heritage Trail.  I was wowed by the vibrant yellow wildflowers framing the trail and the view of the harbour, as we stopped to take it all in.  We then headed to Victoria Road for lunch.  I especially enjoyed the experience of parking our bikes outside the restaurant and lingering over a delicious leisurely lunch and pleasant conversation.  

 

We made our way back to Membertou by way of Habourside Park and the Ferry Street Bridge.  I felt safe as I rode the George Street bike lane for the first time.  We avoided the dreaded George Street hill by taking Shandwick Street to the entrance of the Greenlink Rotary Park Trail.  We enjoyed the beauty of the trial as we rode along the wooded area beside a brook and then back to Membertou.

 

We finished the ride feeling relaxed and happy with the memory of a joyful day.

 

 

Note:  Next Tuesday September 25th is the last one on paved roads starting from Tim Horton in Membertou at 10:00 am.

October's Tuesday Morning are for riders of "fat tires".  We will be starting from various locations (announced in the VCB eNews) to explore the back country and fire roads in the area.  No real technical stuff, just pleasant riding off paved roads and traffic.  Get your bike ready!

HEADS UP

CAN-BIKE Sessions to hone your skills, ease you way in city traffic, develop and/or improve your confidence as a cyclist on a ride around the block or a tour around the world.

Introduction to CAN-BIKE Skills:

In Sydney,  Sept. 29 or 30.  (there are 2 spots left for Saturday, see here for details)  

In Port Hawkesbury,  October 6 or 7 or 8  (course filling up. Only a couple of spots left.  First come - First serve.)

In Baddeck,  October 13 or 14

Note:  Participants don't need to bring anything special other than their bicycle in good working order and a few $$ for a quick lunch.  The session is not physically hard and should not make you really hot.  We'll keep our fingers crossed for decent days.  If the weather is involving unsafe riding/practicing conditions we'll have to postpone or cancel it altogether, participants will be fully re-imbursed.  They will also be fully re-imbursed if not enough registration are received for a specific date.  As there is traveling costs involved for the Instructor, five participants are needed for sessions outside of Sydney as only three are required for sessions in Sydney.

GEORGE STREET BIKE LANES - AN UPDATE

Stage two of the project is closing in.  The road and underground service rebuilding from Townsend to Prince is coming to an end. 

 

Temporary lane marking are in place and changes will be made to the Prince street intersection including a separate right turning lane.

 

The bike lanes and sharrows will be painted when the rest of the lane painting is done.  This work is done by a contractor based on the mainland.  CBRM expects this will be done late in September.  When this happens the bike lanes/ sharrows will stretch from Townsend to Ortona.

 

More good news - CBRM plans to re-pave Dorchester to Prince next year.  So we'll have bikelanes and fresh pavement all music to a cyclist's ears.

 

 

HOW TO CLIMB STEEP HILLS WHILE CYCLING - Feedback

Well, I checked the link. I think this article will break some hearts and some wills if adopted by casual or touring cyclists, or even a beginner with fitness aspirations. It might be appropriate for a fitness buff who is in good shape or for an amateur racing cyclist, but I'm not sure. Mostly it seems to be specifically pointed at a rider entering a hill climb competition, but it is hard to tell.

Agree 100% Leo.  But I choose this one as it was focus on a performance climb, i.e. Time trials advertised (Montée de la French,  Kelly's Klimb)

For the more "relaxed riders" wanting to improve his/her climbing skills, there's this excellent article about "Those Dreaded Hills" written by Bob White, CAN-BIKE National Examiner and reproduced on his website here.

JOSEPH HOWE CENTURY TOUR

Hi all, just a reminder that the Joseph Howe Century Tour is coming up on Sunday September 23rd.  The ride starts in Dartmouth at Graham's Grove Park on the shores of Lake Banook.  Registration is between 8AM and 9AM.  This is Nova Scotia's oldest organized century ride (100 miles), happening every September since 1974.  The information poster, and registration form, are to be found at www.velohalifax.com.  Print off the forms and bring them with you to the ride start.

 

There is a lunch stop at the halfway point and snacks and water are available at the 40km and 120km checkpoints.  There will be a sag wagon on route in case of emergency breakdowns.  Hope to see you there!

 

 

THE GOOD LUCK SIGN

Grandma is eighty eight years old and still drives her own car.

 

She writes:

 

Dear Grand-daughter,

 

The other day I went up to our local Christian book store and saw a 'Honk if you love Jesus' bumper sticker.   I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting..  So, I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper.

 

Boy, am I glad I did; what an uplifting experience that followed.  I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good he is, and I didn't notice that the light had changed.

 

It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have noticed. I found that lots of people love Jesus!  While I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, 'For the love of God!'  'Go!  Go! Go! Jesus Christ, GO!'   What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus!

 

Everyone started honking!  I just leaned out my window and started waving and smiling at all those loving people.  I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love!  There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a sunny beach.. 

 

I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air.  I asked my young teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant.  He said it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something.

 

Well, I have never met anyone from Hawaii , so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign right back.  

 

My grandson burst out laughing.  Why even he was enjoying this religious experience!!

 

A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me.  I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed.

 

So, grinning, I waved at all my brothers and sisters, and drove on through the intersection.

 

I noticed that I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared.

 

So I slowed the car down, leaned out the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks!!
