It is a great pleasure for me to be involved with all the great people I meet through Velo Cape Breton.  I am working on cycling more each month. For the first time this winter I cycled at least once in January, February and March.  My next goal is cycle more this spring and summer than last year. I will try to join the regular rides when I can and get more experience. I love to use my bike for shopping and going to the library or anywhere downtown. I just learned how to change a tire! As you can see this is all new to me and I hope you are inspired by the people you meet through Velo Cape Breton to do something new too.

Meanwhile I have joined the work of Velo Cape Breton to create a healthier more active community with better places to cycle, more events for all ages cycling and improvements in the support we get from government to get kids on bikes at summer camps in CBRM, support bike events around the island through our partner groups and develop cycle tourism for all of us, including the many people who want to visit our island.  I look forward to building Velo Cape Breton capacity for supporting all of us in being healthy and active.

Have a great cycling season!

Hello to all past, current, and future members of Velo Cape Breton.  Although I had been a member for several years prior to joining the Board of Directors, it was only when I volunteered as Membership Registrar did I begin to understand the amazing work that this dedicated group does.  VCB Board Members regularly meet with Municipal and Provincial groups to advocate for better cycling conditions throughout Cape Breton Island.  They provide education courses on proper cycling to safely navigate our roads, and also organize and schedule a full array of rides.  All of this is done on a volunteer basis, because they believe in the cause, as do I.

I hope that all members will make a commitment to participate in, or volunteer to help, in as many cycling related activities as possible.

May all your rides have the wind at your back.

Melissa Boutilier,  Treasurer

I grew up in a family of cyclists but have only recently developed a passion for the sport. A few years ago I purchased a new bike in the hopes of competing in a few local triathlons and haven’t looked back since. I joined Velo in 2015 as a means of training for a ride around the Cabot Trail and was overwhelmed by the support and guidance this group offers. I am excited to uphold Velo’s reputation of providing a safe and fun environment for both experienced cyclists and those new to the sport. As an accountant I look forward to applying my skill-set in order to help this club continue to grow. Happy Cycling!

NOTE:  Due to illness, Treasurer duties are currently being done by Andree Crepeau, Member-at-Large.

Nova Scotia born and raised, I have always had an interest in healthy living and outdoor exploration, filling my time with walking, running, kayaking, snowboarding, snowshoeing, camping, hiking, backpacking, and exploring the Great Outdoors of this beautiful province and beyond.  I will always remember my first vehicle -- the bicycle I received in grade school as a child.  In July of 2013 I decided to become a member of Velo Cape Breton, following a strong desire to get back into cycling.

With a background and a passion in marketing and promotions, I hope to assist Velo Cape Breton with the planning and promotion of events, member services and other successes and accomplishments.  Velo Cape Breton is achieving great things for it's members and for the community, and my goals are to make these accomplishments known, and to deliver the messages of VCB loud and clear!  So please join us - both on your bicycle and at other events and initiatives - there's plenty of fun for everyone.

Here's to exploring where your bicycle may take you!

I am the Physical Activity Coordinator for Naturally Active Victoria County (Est. 2011) since June 2011.

I have over 20 years of experience in recreation, sport and physical activity and officiating hockey (1991 Canada Winter Games) and soccer.

If I’m not exposing my 5 1/2 year old Jenna to recreation opportunities, you'll find me hiking or snowshoeing to a peak.

Fresh off Naturally Active's "Celebration" with 2 Time Gold Medalist & Flag Bearer Heather Moyse (2014) I continue to outreach, partner and collaborate for the betterment of the lives of our residents & visitors, including Velo Cape Breton.

My hope is to have a renewal of the municipality physical activity strategy for another 5 years (2016-2021) in 2016.  As a Member pf the VCB Board and Community Outreach for Cape Breton Region, I wish to build a cycling environment having residents and visitors of all ages cycling.
